BioNTech officials told today that their vaccine is most likely to kill the corona virus and could also kill the new mutated strain of the virus that is found in Britain. But there is a chance that the new mutated virus could overcome the vaccine.
“Scientifically, it is highly likely that the immune response by this vaccine also can deal with the new virus variant,” Ugur Sahin told.
“But if needed, in principle the beauty of the messenger technology is that we can directly start to engineer a vaccine which completely mimics this new mutation — we could be able to provide a new vaccine technically within six weeks.” he added.
He told that total 9 different mutations are found in the Great Britain. But he sounded confident that Pfizer vaccine would be more effective because “it has more than 1000 amino acids and only 9 of them have changed that means 99% of the protein is still the same”
He told that tests are being performed on the new mutated strains and the results will come in the next two weeks.
“We have scientific confidence that the vaccine might protect but we will only know it if the experiment is done and we will publish the data as soon as possible,” he added.
New Mutated virus strain
Who (World Health Organization) said in a tweet that it was “in close contact with UK officials on the new #COVID19 virus variant” and they will update the country officials and the public as soon as the results come out.
The mutated virus was first found in England in September and it is still spreading in the country, a WHO official told.
“What we understand is that it does have increased transmissibility, in terms of its ability to spread,” told Maria Van Kerkhove.
“it’s related to the variant itself, or a combination of factors with behaviour,” she said.
She added “the strain had also been identified in Denmark, the Netherlands and Australia, where there was one case that didn’t spread further.”
“The longer this virus spreads, the more opportunities it has to change,” she told. “So we really need to do everything we can right now to prevent spread.”
Mutation in viruses is regular and scientists have found several different alterations in the corona virus sample.
