Lahore-February 04: Principal Post Graduate Medical Institute & Ameer Uddin Medical College Prof. Dr. Sardar Muhammad Al-freed Zafar has said that Lahore General Hospital is a unique Institution for the treatment of cancer in children where all the relevant facilities are provided free of cost. Similarly, pediatric eye cancer is also treated only in this Institute across the country where all modern facilities are available under one roof and not a single penny is spent of any patient.

These views were expressed by Principal Prof. Al-freed Zafar while addressing a special ceremony held in the Pediatric’s Ward of LGH on the occasion of World Cancer Day. He said that this year’s theme on cancer is “I AM & I Will” which aims at it is a symbol of courage, perseverance and steadfastness and urges the physicians as well as the patients to fight against this disease and never give up, so we must continue the treatment with determination and faith in Allah Almighty. Prof. Muhammad Shahid, Prof. Agha Shabir Ali, Prof. Muhammad Moin, Dr. Aftab Anwar, Dr. Sana Riaz, Dr. Muzammil Azam, Dr. Shah Zain, Nusrat Tahira, Zuneera Anwar, Shazia Farooqi, young doctors and parents of the children were also present on this occasion.

The ceremony was specially attended by children with cancer who had recovered from the LGH and gifts were also distributed among them while the parents of the children expressed their views and said that cancer is a deadly disease for which people spent millions of rupees on medical treatment which is impossible for the poor and middle class but the doctors, nurses and administration of LGH have won the hearts of our children by providing best care and free medical & diagnostic services to them.

Prof. Al-freed Zafar and Prof. Agha Shabir Ali further said that sedentary lifestyle is also one of the causes of cancer, birth of children under 30 years of age and breastfeeding for a long time also reduce the risk of breast cancer in women. He said that Pakistan is the leading country in Asia in terms of the number of people suffering from cancer.

Principal PGMI told that with early diagnosis and proper treatment facilities, cancer can be completely eradicated and the WHO warned in this regard. It is known that by 2030, more than 30 million people worldwide will be diagnosed with cancer, so vaccinate against cancer-causing infections, exercise and lead a simple life, Prof. Al-freed Zafar added.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Muhammad Shahid and other doctors said that although cancer has become a treatable disease in modern times, the patients and their families lose consciousness as soon as they hear about the diagnosis of this disease.

At the end of the event, the journalists were shown a specially designed kitchen for children suffering from cancer while the aim is to ensure the supply of quality standard food to children. Children from other cities including Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali, Sheikhupura and Lahore come for treatment for blood, gland and eye cancer. At the end of the ceremony, a cake was cut to celebrate the recovery of children suffering from cancer in LGH.
